Certain things come to mind when we think about touring rock stars: groupies, long hours on the road, and a life free of brown M&Ms (if you're Van Halen, that is). What we don't immediately think about is looking gorg on stage. After all, women who kick out the jams are more focused on minor chords than the power cords of their blowdryers. Understandably.
And yet, when you look at Icona Pop, the Swedish synth-pop duo whose hit "I Love It" has been everywhere, we wonder if maybe it is possible to look drop-dead gorgeous while living out of a tour bus. Case in point: Caroline Hjlet and Aino Jawo. So, we had to ask them how they do it. (Wouldn't you?)
“You’re exposed to so many different environments between flying, being on the bus, and on stage that your skin gets affected," admits Hjlet. "The lack of sleep doesn’t help, either." So, this fan of natural skin care goes for a weekly facial (which is impressive, considering the duo's touring schedule). Offstage, she doesn't go for much makeup, but on stage, Hjlet says, "We play around and make things dramatic. I love, love Armani foundation because I don’t want it to show that I’m wearing makeup, and Armani is great for that."
As for Jawo, who's been rocking an asymmetrical bob as of late, it's all about the products. Stylist Brandon Pope says, "We set half of her head with the TIGI Pro Curl Stick using BedHead Masterpiece Hairspray." On the opposite side, Jawo uses BedHead Up Front pomade to slick down the opposite side. ("For an undercut feel," Pope explains.) So, if this sort of low-maintenance attitude (and, you know, musical skill) is what it takes to be an onstage star, consider us halfway there. (Just need to learn how to play a synthesizer first.)
