If you've paged through an electronic music magazine lately, you may not believe that female producers even exist. Fortunately, those "best DJ" lists that only include millionaire males with Vegas residencies are rightfully criticized for being myopic. And, while the music-producer game is still largely male dominated, there are some women out there making amazing strides — and songs!
Veteran studio wizard Linda Perry has produced hits for everyone's favorite resurgent pop females of the past decade (Gwen, P!nk, Christina) and inspired Sia, the current-day collaboration queen. Grimes has transcended her psychedelic-bedroom-pop sound to land a deal with Roc Nation, and the underrated pop producer and singer Little Boots helped usher in a new era of dance music on the radio. That's just a perfunctory stab at the ladies doing the darn thing.
There are also legends to behold: Delia Derbyshire, who created the "Dr. Who" theme in 1963, Missy Elliot, Laurie Anderson, Meredith Monk, even medieval music-maker Hildegard of Bingen. (So before her time.) To add to that list, here are a dozen women producing incredible music, and rewriting genre rules as they do it. Listen up: It's time to tune in, get inspired, and start making some noise of your own.
