Fashion's biggest theme party doesn't happen on Halloween. It occurs whenever Chanel has a show. Whether the event takes place in Dallas, at the Great Wall, or in the middle of a fake grocery store, Karl Lagerfeld will run with the inspiration to create a massive collection of 80+ looks in all their quilted, tweedy glory. Sometimes, the idea can skew a little gauche. (Remember this?) Other times, it can be paradigm-shifting. And, sometimes — in this case — it can be equal parts silly and spectacular.
In his latest go-where-the-money-is move, Lagerfeld held Chanel's resort '15 showing in Dubai. The sprawling city is a beacon of modernity, but the designer chose to resurrect some traditional iconography of Middle Eastern fashion, from the real and historical to Hollywood-born exoticism. There were plenty of geometric tile prints, babouche-style slippers, and nickel tassels paired with I-Dream-of-Jeannie hair, gold-lamé harem pants, sequined towers in the shape of the Burj Khalifa, and moon-and-stars headbands bound to be this season's version of the oversized pearl choker. In keeping with tradition of creating a series of purses around the theme's biggest gimmeck, Lagerfeld designed Chanel-logo-emblazoned gas-tank bags that range from pint-size, chain crossbodies to massive, quilted jugs. Love it or hate it, Lagerfeld's style definitely pours on the excess.
