Dove Encourages Young Girls To Love Their Curly Hair

Dove has come out with another viral-worthy video campaign, this time aimed at encouraging young girls to embrace their curly hair. It opens with little ones of different races and backgrounds, ages five to 11, expressing frustration with their curliness. Admittedly, this pulled at our heartstrings.  According to Dove's data, only four out of 10 curly girls think their hair is beautiful. For me, someone who has dealt with the inner turmoil of disliking my own tightly-coiled strands — eventually choosing to chemically straighten them — this video strikes a chord. I've recently embraced my natural texture, and the message it evokes is one I believe women of all ages — and hair textures — could benefit from.  Sure, the whole song-and-dance bit errs on the Sesame Street-y side, and some may say it's conveniently timed given the natural hair movement has been taking off recently. But, at the end of the day, it encourages girls to embrace their natural beauty, regardless of society's standards. We are more than 100% behind that. Plus, that song is pretty damn catchy.
