Snoop Dogg’s New HBO Show Will Be An ’80s Throwback

Fresh
off his performance on the season finale of our favorite new show, Empire, Snoop Dogg announced during his SXSW keynote speech on Friday that he will
executive produce a drama about 1980s Los Angeles for HBO, Variety reports.

Partnering
with Menace II Society director Allen
Hughes and The Boondocks writer
Rodney Barnes, Snoop Dogg will be looking back on his own childhood in 1980’s
Long Beach as pre-pseudonym Cordozar Calvin Broadus, Jr., for inspiration. The
as-of-yet untitled series will focus on a seemingly idyllic L.A. family dealing
with the impact of Reagan-era social policies on their neighborhood. (Dare we
say, the “trickle-down effect” on the community? Too overt?)

Snoop
Dogg is a noted fan of HBO’s record-breaking Game of Thrones, so his decision to partner with the network comes
as no surprise,
and we’re curious to see what they develop together. As long as the controversial rapper
keeps his potentially homophobic tendencies in check, that is.
