Bratz Dolls Get A Major Makeunder

Barbie, it looks like you've got some competition for the most controversial children's toy title. Bratz dolls, who have gotten a fair share of flack for overly glammed up makeup looks, are getting a serious makeunder. Alas, the transformation does not come courtesy of their mother company — instead, it was dreamed up by an Australian woman named Sonia Singh, who has been collecting the dolls and repainting their faces. She calls them Tree Change Dolls. After picking up Bratz dolls from second-hand shops, Singh completely repaints their faces, taking off all the makeup and shrinking the eyes and lips to more "lifelike" sizes. She restyles their hair, knits them new clothes, and even gives them more proportionate feet. The dolls look like normal, everyday girls, instead of the weirdly sexed up toys they started out as. As we've stated before, we're pretty on board with people wearing whatever kind of makeup they want. But, there is something pretty refreshing about a set of dolls that are a lot less hypersexualized. (They are, after all, marketed to children.) It might be nice if more dolls looked like the children who were playing with them — whether it's in regards to the makeup they wear, their skin color, or their body proportions.  Tree Change Dolls aren't for sale yet, but Singh promises an Etsy shop is right around the corner.
