Anna Kendrick On Hollywood’s Gender Inequality: “What The F–k?”

Our fondness for Anna Kendrick has been well-documented. She sticks up for her pals, refuses to pose sexy, and has no shame about lusting after Ryan Gosling. Not surprisingly, there's a lot to love about Kendrick's cover feature for the June issue of Glamour, but her takedown of Hollywood's double standard is especially spectacular.  The Pitch Perfect 2 star didn't try to gloss over any debate about Hollywood's gender bias.  "All the films nominated [for a Best Picture Oscar] this year had male leads," she pointed out. "Like, every single one. So, I’m glad that [equality’s] feeling like a bigger issue now." The Oscar-nominated star has experienced this sort of inequality first-hand.  "There’s [a film I’m considering] now where I have to wait for all the male roles to be cast before I can even become a part of the conversation," Kendrick revealed. "Part of me gets that. [But] part of me is like, 'What the f--k? You have to cast for females based on who’s cast as males?' To me, the only explanation is that there are so many f--king talented girls, and from a business standpoint it’s easier to find women to match the men. I totally stand by the belief that there are 10 unbelievably talented women for every role." Kendrick, however, dismissed the idea that the small selection of juicy female roles made actresses more competitive with one another. "If anything, it bonds you because we’re all dealing with the same problem," she told the magazine.  Kudos to Kendrick for speaking out — and for promoting female-centric films like Pitch Perfect that don't live or die by their male leads.
