Traveling Couple Admits Their Life Isn’t That Glamorous

Photographed by Michelle Drewes.
Chanel Cartell and Stevo Dirnberger have the kind of Instagram feed that inspires both awe and envy in equal parts. One day the couple snaps a pic of a swan swimming in front of an Austrian mountain scape. The next, Stevo stands in front of a Vienna amusement park so picturesque, it could have been built just for the photo ops.

We chose to get lost in #Vienna today, and after finding the Prater Amusement Park, our lives felt complete.

However, it seems life isn't all fresh-baked pastries and nature for the couple, who quit their full-time jobs in South Africa earlier this year to travel the world — an experience they've documented on their blog, How Far From Home.

I baked and discovered the magical combination that is raspberries & dark chocolate. Yum.

As they explain in a post titled, "Why We Quit Our Jobs In Advertising To Scrub Toilets," some aspects of their new lives as nomads are less than glamorous. "So far, I think we’ve tallied 135 toilets scrubbed, 250 kilos of cow dung spread, 2 tons of rocks shovelled, 60 metres of pathway laid, 57 beds made, and I cannot even remember how many wine glasses we’ve polished," wrote Cartell.
Still, before that account causes you to rethink your plans to quit your job and travel the globe, bear in mind that the couple insists they don't regret their decision, even if financing their travels gets a little dirty sometimes.
"It’s like heaven for us," continued Cartell. "Sure, wood needs to be stacked, and garbage needs to be taken out (it’s our version of a shit sandwich, as Mark Manson put it), but once that’s done, we’re free to explore, wander and be one with our meandering thoughts." Sounds like a pretty reasonable trade-off to us. (BuzzFeed)
