Marchelle Bradanini (a.k.a. Pony Boy) is no ordinary country artist. First of all, calling her music simply "country" probably does it a disservice to begin with. While her voice drips with an unmistakable twang, her husky delivery is bolstered by reverb-heavy spaghetti Western guitars, strange, often-spooky studio effects, and lyrics saturated with melancholy. (Basically, think the exact opposite of Brad Paisley.)
The new Paul McGuigan-directed video for "Greatest Unknown" follows Bradanini from windswept winter landscapes (the video was shot in Glasgow and the surrounding Scottish countryside) to a darkened club, all the while maintaining Pony Boy's air of southern gothic mystery. "Time came on by / Looked us in the eye / I know you could never mine," Bradanini laments. Those infatuated by Nancy Sinatra and Loretta Lynn's darker sides should fall in love with Pony Boy's brand of blues. Just let Pony Boy crawl under your skin and stay there.
