This Is Our Jam: Icona Pop, “I Love It”

Swedish duo Icona Pop seems to believe that the best sort of pop is the kind you can’t ignore no matter how hard you try. In keeping with this philosophy, “I Love It” forces the hooks down your throat with explosive resolve. With huge electro-synths and an immediately infectious, well, everything, it’s a brute-force jam meant to be experienced when the club is at its absolute-peak intensity. The lyrics “I crashed my car into the bridge... I let it burn” embody this fuck-it-let’s-party attitude, and the chorus, “I don’t care — I love it!!!” is a big middle finger to the haters. The track was written by Charli XCX, who herself is at the top of her game. But given to the girls in Icona Pop, “I Love It” is allowed a freewheeling fervor that Charli tends to shy away from. Resistance is futile.
