Tap for artist Caroline Barnes’s best tricks.
If it’s positioned at too low of an angle, Barnes says your mirror could sabotage your look. The glass should be up high if you really want a feel-good factor out of your finished look.
Applying blush too high can distorts the cheeks. So where does it go? There are two methods: "If you look directly in the mirror at your pupil, imagine a line coming straight down and smile — that will give you the peak of the apple of your cheek, right in the center," says Barnes.
If you want to create an angular effect, apply blush to the high points of your face and simply take it across the cheek in a diagonal shape.
"I love brushing hair gel through eyebrows because it really keeps them in place, and I like to use hairspray sprayed onto a spoolie brush and combed through hairs, too," Barnes says.
"I’ve also used soap in a similar way for years by scraping it onto a spoolie, but if you're going to do that, be sure to use clear soap because you don’t want to make your eyebrows look flaky," she says.
Forget your face and neck for a minute — you need to look at the color of your chest to get the perfect foundation match.
"Fingers really manipulate the product into your skin better than a brush, which you might have to constantly change in terms of shape," she says. This is particularly true when it comes to under-eye concealer.
"Foundation going a little darker can be a result of your skin's pH," Barnes says. Use a mattifying primer before foundation and blotting papers throughout the day will help.
