You are what you eat! Things like spice, onions, and garlic can come out through your pores and breath for up to 48 hours. You’ll smell best if you eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, and minimize how much alcohol you consume.
The main component of smelling good is — surprise — the fragrance. Finding the perfect one is a process, but it'll make a world of difference. If you can, buy a perfume sampler set (we like the ones at Sephora!) to fully explore your choices.
When people go shopping for clothes, they don't just look at a shirt and buy it. You have to try it on, and the same goes for fragrances. The smell will change throughout the day. To really know if a fragrance is right, take a sample home, wear it for a bit, and then decide.
"Staying well-hydrated is key, especially with natural fragrances that don’t contain synthetic fixatives," says Lurk natural fragrances founder Anne Sanford. "When our skin gets dry, it tends to absorb and dissipate perfume much more quickly."
"Fragrance rises from the bottom to the top, so if you spray at all your chakra points—ankle, behind the knees, pubic-hair area, chest, and behind your ears—you get the full benefit from a fragrance," says Aedes de Venustas co-owner Karl Bradl.
Perfumes are available many forms. Most of the experts we spoke with like to layer these different iterations to build on the fragrance. You can layer body oil with a perfume that has the same scent or, if you're up for experimenting, try layering different scents.
An inexpensive tip to make fragrance hast longer: Rub a little vitamin E oil on before you spritz. Spring Valley Vitamin E Skin Oil, $13.70, available at Amazon.
Apply one to three times per day, depending on the fragrance (lighter citrus fragrances are quicker to fade than heavier scents like vanilla). Stick a travel size or sample in your purse or in your car—just be sure not to overdo it.
If your fragrance of choice isn’t available in a travel size, or if you’re just in search of a thriftier way to take it on-the-go, then you can just decant your perfume into an empty roll-on bottle.
A lot of our experts recommend spreading the love to your apartment, clothes, and even hair. Of course, fragrances aren't cheap, so maybe pick up room sprays or candles to do the job.
Washing clothing regularly makes a major difference in the odors you emit. And if you want to level up, there are fancy laundry products, too. "Many detergents are actually mimicking what’s happening in the fine-fragrance market," says Linda Song, perfumer at Givaudan.
