New York Fashion Week's become a coveted testing ground for new products, and it's no longer just clothing trends. Just observe any the e-cig brands proffering their wares outside Lincoln Center. Or maybe you noticed the Moto X devices at Hood by Air and En Noir?
Tech product placement, once reserved for big budget music videos, is fashion culture's latest integrative outpost. Google Glass, the wearable "augmented reality" device by Motorola, is pounding the virtual pavement this Fashion Week, perhaps emboldened by its recent spot in a September Vogue spread. According to Business Insider, Glass has crept onto the faces of Nina Garcia, Zac Posen and Lucky editrix Eva Chen — and naturally, the countless style bloggers always eager for novelty. The very active @GoogleGlass Instagram documents the show-to-show exploits; naturally, just about every wearer looks delighted.
Whether this immersive marketing will make Google Glass, and wearable tech in general, more palatable to the mainstream public remains guesswork. As of June, most people polled find the device "freakish" and somewhat "useless." In other words, another Segway. But, could Segway allow you to fulfill your inner "Robocop" fantasies? We think not, and that's why we'd wear Glass in a heartbeat. Your move, Google. [Business Insider]
