Are guys talking like Cher Horowitz-esque Valley girls now? According to a new study, turns out the answer is yes.
Females have long had to take the brunt of the stereotype — you know the one: young, spoiled, and totally ditzy girls from SoCal whose school days consist of breaking in their purple clogs (thanks, Clueless). But fellas, you're officially no longer immune to the mold.
University of California San Diego linguist Amanda Ritchart found that just as many men as women have taken up the style of speaking that is commonly associated with Valley girls. The style is known as "uptalk," or raising one's voice at the end of a sentence. "We found use of uptalk in all of our speakers, despite their diverse backgrounds, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, bilingualism and gender,” says Ritchart. Her study, which consisted of Southern California college students, also disproves the idea that people who use uptalk are asking questions and not making statements—in fact, native Southern Californians can tell the difference based on the specific pitch.
So, do we sense a male lead for Clueless 2? (International Business Times)
