Ever since detectives Rust and Hart rode off into the sunset to close out the memorable first season of HBO's searing mystery series True Detective, the Internet has been engaged in a never-ending guessing game over who might fill their shoes in season 2. Well, it looks like all the hypothesizing might finally be coming to an end.
Recent rumors suggested that series creator Nic Pizzolatto was interested in a female-heavy cast for the upcoming season, and according to The Nerdist, he may just get his wish. It's being reported that Jessica Chastain has been formally offered the lead role, but has yet to accept.

So far Chastain has exhibited near immaculate taste in her choice of roles, so odds are the actress won't pass on what has become one of the most coveted roles in Hollywood. With Chastain's film career thriving (we caught a glimpse of her in last week's Interstellar trailer), the only question now is whether she's willing to commit to an epic six-month shoot. That's the amount of time it took Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson to film the first season, and according to the actors it was quite grueling.
If Chastain does sign on, the focus will shift to her potential partner, assuming there is one. Brad Pitt's name keeps popping up, and where there's smoke, there's usually fire. While nothing is official, today we want to live in a world where Pitt and Chastain have been cast in True Detective season 2. Make it happen, HBO. (Vanity Fair)
Update: Reps for Chastain have told E! News that she will not appear in the series. HBO has also denied the original report.
