Once upon a time, in the days of high school musicals (not starring Zac Efron), there was one song every girl with a song in her heart imagined herself singing: Fantine's heart-wrenching "I Dreamed A Dream" from the musical Les Misérables. Voiced by the downtrodden factory-worker-turned-prostitute, the tune is perhaps the musical's most recognizable (aside from maybe the Joey Potter-immortalized "On My Own," of course).
The new Les Misérables trailer features Anne Hathaway rumbling out "I Dreamed A Dream," while images of the French Revolution, starving children, and Hugh Jackman play across the screen, proving once again that she is certainly the most glamorous of all theater geeks. And maybe this is just the former theatre nerd in us, but Miss Hathaway's rendition is just as heart-wrenching as we imagined ourselves to be in the ninth grade. Under the direction of Tom Hooper (The King's Speech), we hope this version will fare better than Claire Danes' not-musical retelling.
