Whether it's mastering how to cocktail products, finding the perfect essential and carrier oil combination, or making their own deep conditioning mask, at-home hair concoctions are a curly girl's best friend. That, combined with all of the attention beauty boxes have been getting lately, we think it's safe to say that CurlMix, a DIY subscription service launching today for people with textured hair — be it wavy, curly, or kinky — is going to make a lot of coily ladies happy.
Cofounders Tim and Kim Lewis (who've also launched The Natural Hair Academy, a social network for people with natural hair), decided to start the brand after Kim experienced the stress of taking on a new DIY project. "As a seasoned naturalista and entrepreneur in the curly hair industry, I thought we didn’t need any more beauty subscription boxes," she explains. "But my thoughts quickly changed... after I spent one hour researching, two hours shopping, and another hour mixing. I also spent over $300 on ingredients alone, no containers, or utensils."
The Lewis' partnered with the brains behind popular natural-hair blogs like Natural Chica and Hey Fran Hey, to create the new service that delivers vloggers' favorite recipes to your front door. The box comes with five to seven ingredients (which are most often organic), a note from the vlogger, a "bonus element" (like an all-natural product from a company sponsor), and two containers to store the mixture (for you and a friend).
At about $30 per month (you can choose a one month, three month, or one year subscription), the price is on par with other subscription boxes, and each recipe should last for four to six uses. Since there’s no such thing has a one-size-fits-all-hair-type product, CurlMix also provides suggestions on how to adjust the recipe to fit your specific curls.
Now we can already anticipate your questions: How is this different from looking up a DIY recipe and buying the ingredients yourself? Why would I pay people to do something I can do just as easily on my own? Well, if you're already an at-home enthusiast, this box probably isn’t for you. But for those looking to dip their toes into DIY (or don’t have the time or money to shell out), Curlmix is the perfect introduction.
What do you think? Will you be signing up? Just remember, CurlMix launches today at 1 p.m. — and since they only sell for a 24-hour period — we recommend you decide ASAP.
