Celebrities have a history of diverting from the expected on their wedding days, especially when it comes to their outfit choices. In 1959, Elizabeth Taylor married Eddie Fisher in a Las Vegas chapel wearing a green short dress with a matching hood. In 1971, Bianca Jagger famously wore a YSL suit instead of a wedding dress and we're still talking about both.
That being said, in the last few years, Hollywood’s most recognisable names have become even more daring with their bridal looks. In 2014, singer Solange Knowles biked to her New Orleans wedding in an ivory Stéphane Rolland jumpsuit with a plunging neckline and a detachable cape. In 2018, Emily Ratajkowski got hitched in a $200 burnt orange pantsuit from Zara, and a year later, Ozark actress Julia Garner got married in a turtleneck and ruffle-hem pants.
In a post-lockdown world, modern brides are rejecting traditionally grand festivities, opting instead for more intimate ceremonies. And in turn, trends in wedding dresses reflect the desire for more personal, alternative outfits full of character — and that can be re-worn.
For a little bit of inspiration, we rounded up our favourite unconventional wedding dresses of all time. Scroll through for outfit inspo for the big day!
