Anne Hathaway Talks Feminism & Not Giving A Sh*t With Eve Ensler

In case you didn't know, Eve Ensler wrote one of the great doctrines of '90s feminist literature, The Vagina Monologues, and has since become a generally amazing woman who spends her life working to bring attention to the violence facing women. And in case you didn't know, Anne Hathaway is a triple-threat: An actress, singer, and style maven who is about to (maybe, hopefully) win an Oscar for her performance in Les Misérables. The two of them, both representing honesty, awareness, and feminine empowerment, sat down to chat about marriage, hair, and dancing for women's rights.
In the new issue of Glamour, Ensler talked to Hathaway about her involvement in One Billion Rising, an organization that strives to end violence against women and is organizing a walkout one billion strong on February 14 — every participant symbolizing a woman who has been abused. Hathaway is passionate about the cause, talking about the fact that it is her responsibility to "have an impact." "A cause like One Billion Rising is something I want to scream about, and I want you to take that scream seriously because I don’t fall out of nightclubs...In One Billion Rising you have activists and thinkers and 'celebrities.' But I’m an actress. The celebrity thing just happened."

Though, not explicitly mentioning it, Hathaway briefly addresses her heartbreak over Raffaello Follieri, her ex who was revealed to be a con-man in 2008, saying, "I found out that my trust had been betrayed quite massively. So, for me, that call came at the end of 2007. Who was I going to be? There’s no magic bullet; there’s no pill that you take that makes everything great and makes you happy all the time." She explains that, unfortunately, her body issues are an "unfortunate source of shame" and that having short hair forces her to feel more exposed.
But most importantly, Hathaway talks about her plans for her first Valentine's Day as a married lady. Like hopefully one billion other women (and men) around the world, she's going to go outside and dance, because, as she says, "...on the 14th, even if you’re in a field dancing by yourself, you’re going to know you’re not alone." Anne, this is a-ma-zing...but just try telling that last part to your Les Mis co-star Samantha Barks.
