Shop Like A Pro: 5 Tips To Guarantee You Don’t Go Off The (Sales) Rails

sales 600 400
Folks, open season is here: The year's best opportunity to pick up high fashion at knock-down prices, online and on the high street. But tread carefully. For every sale gem there are 1,000 missteps to be made. Don't reach for your credit card until you've read, digested, and memorised our handy five-point sale-shopping guide. Happy bargain hunting!

1. Formulate a plan.
Before you even think about setting foot in a store — or lunging for your mouse — take a moment to look at your wardrobe and ask yourself, "What do I need?". Boring? Perhaps. But it's absolutely necessary if you want to buy something that you'll actually wear. It's also a perfect opportunity to take stock of previous mistakes. Like the bargainous Chanel-homage clogs that you bought right at the tail-end of that trend back in 2010. Still untouched in their box? Our point precisely.

2. Beware the lure of the trophy item.
In an ideal world, we'd love to be dressed in head-to-toe, eye-frazzling Miu Miu brocade. But, fashion is a cruel mistress, and dressing in upholstery fabric sadly isn't a look for everyone, nor for every occasion. This is the distinction between want and wear. Can you imagine wearing it? If so, where and when? Answer this (honestly) and you're golden.

3. Shop around.
Spotted an unmissable bargain? Panicked by the ominous "only two left" when you check your size online? Just make sure that's true — a quick Google should reveal all.

4. 80% off does not a bargain make.

Just because it has a fancy designer label or it's had £2,000 lopped off the original price, doesn't mean it's a good buy. Indeed, it can mean quite the opposite. Ask yourself why has the RRP been ripped to shreds. Is it impractical? Is it a complete red herring? Will this purchase make burning your current wardrobe and rebuilding it from scratch absolutely necessary? Is it going to look desperately out of date come January 1? If you answer yes to any of these, PUT IT BACK ON THE RAIL, NOW.

5.Take your time.
Resist the illusion of scarcity. It's easy to convince yourself that if you don't buy this now, you'll never get it this cheap again. For further reading, please refer to points 1, 2, 3 and 4.
