Our New Tennis Crush Beats A Living Legend

Yes, your nose may be covered with icicles and a game of outdoor tennis may be quite far from your frozen brain, but down under, players are pounding the hard courts in the later rounds of the Australian Open under a hot sun. Lucky them, right?
In case you missed it, yesterday saw two of our faves — the already legendary Serena Williams and young up-and-comer Sloane Stephens — square off in a quarterfinal match (the first all-American at a major in five years). It was hard to pick a favorite seeing as Williams is the beloved, badass master of the women's draw and Stephens a fresh, sweet 19-year-old talent in a very weak field of American competitors. But — whaddya know — Stephens sweated out a three-set match to beat her childhood idol 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 and advance to her first semifinals in a major.

It's a blow for Williams, but a much, much bigger win for Stephens who is quickly winning our hearts. We mean, just look at that face!

As she told the Wall Street Journal, "[I'll] just take it one day at a time obviously, just play my best really. I know definitely everyone's watching back home and is very proud of me, so [I'll] just do my best and make them happy." You totally did, Sloane. You totally did. We'll be watching those semis and checking you at our Open in several months.
