If you've been interested in fashion for more than about .0001 milliseconds, you know it's all cyclical. Sure, things get updated, infused with current pop culture — but at the end of the day, we're often just trying to reinvent the wheel in the most creative way possible (unless you're Martin Margiela, in which case, please disregard). So, with that in mind, what do we think about belly button rings?
For the more squeamish, it's a fad many hope will never return. And yet, it does have a certain appeal in a late-'90s hot-girl kind of way — the same girl who had a million crop tops featuring a bejweled ladybug, was the first one in her class to get low-rise jeans, probably had (or has) a belly button ring. Her, and Beyoncé. Queen B showed off her still-there ring in her H&M ads, leading us to speculate — is this trend on its way back? Fashionista, for one, has noticed a number of other recent iterations of the ring that seem to suggest a renaissance is on the way — both on the runway and on the likes of LiLo. We're personally not sure, though it does seem like something Hedi Slimane might try to make happen.
If anyone can do it, though, it's Bey. She harnesses the power of nostalgia and modernity all in one, and definitely has the ability to start trends in a big way, especially with her H&M contract. But as far as high fashion's current direction, we don't foresee a comeback. Maybe a few seasons back this would have fit in, but demure is the buzzword right now, and that's one thing belly button rings are not.
