As the drama spectacle that is Cannes draws to a close, we bring you what might be the most shocking image from the entire fesival. Naomi Watts as Princess Diana. Yes, we also did a double take when we saw this shot. Entertainment One have just snapped up the distribution rights for the latest royal biopic, Diana, and judging by this image, Naomi Watts is a doppleganger for the late princess.
The actress works that ‘80s coiff with a familiar air of elegance, to fill the role as the leading lady, alongside Lost star, Naveen Andrews. Perfecting the look, the hair, and the overall character, she has us convinced she's the right choice for the role. But, we still can't help but fear, is this a little too soon?

Documenting the life of the princess post-divorce, the film follows her involvement in the anti-landmines campaign and sheds some light on her romantic relationship with heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan. Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, with a script from The Libertine’s Stephen Jeffreys, the film is bound to get people talking.
Though a two-time Academy Award nominee, Watts is yet to be found worthy of the crowning Oscar-glory, but that could be about to change — playing the royal centrepiece has certainly worked for the likes of Colin Firth (King’s Speech) and Helen Mirren (The Queen). So, with the premiere excellently timed just ahead of awards season later this year, can we expect Watts to follow in the footsteps of others, and win big in her royal role? (Oh No They Didn't!)
