If you're one of those people that tends to fall for every Paleo-tastic fad diet that comes your way (we know how it is), you may be surprised to learn that when it comes to diet and exercise, there really is not much that's new.
According to excerpts from the first issue of Reader's Digest magazine (republished in The Huffington Post today), many diet and exercise tips that were common knowledge in the 1920s are still relevant today. For example, a list of not-so-great for you foods are still the ones that nutritionists warn about today (think starchy foods and saturated fats). Another smart tip? That we should limit our sugar intake — a point that is even more important to heed now that we consume even more processed foods that contain sneaky hidden sugar than ever before.
Among the not-so-great tips? The warning that antioxidant-rich olive oil and cocoa are enemies to a healthy diet — and the tip that exercise does more harm than good, due to claims that it stimulates appetite. Well, they couldn't be right about everything, could they?
