Aside from her 2006 Target GO International collab, Iranian-born designer Behnaz Sarafpour isn't exactly a household name. But on Friday, she snagged some well-deserved recognition during the National Design Awards at the White House, hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama. Sarafpour scooped the prize for Fashion Design during a luncheon attended by the likes of Tim Gunn and power couple Isabel and Ruben Toledo. While it might seem like a less-than-obvious choice to the fashion faithful, the fact that Sarafpour's collection is designed and manufactured stateside, in New York's Garment District, and incorporates some organically produced pieces makes her a pretty solid winner for 2013. The Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum organizes the awards, so we can't give MObama all the credit, but we're guessing she was pretty stoked to hand that prize out.
