The NYT Thinks Your Dark Lipstick Is Goth

So, friends, the New York Times has finally weighed in on something we've been talking about for months: dark lipstick. The article, which attributes love for the dark lip to a larger trend of "neo-goth" makeup, has a surprisingly fabulous beauty tutorial for how to get the complete look. Sure, it's one that we admittedly arrive at unintentionally in the wee hours of the morning as we rush to find a way to balance out our burgundy lipstick with our puffy eyes, but you know what? Light-pink cream eyeshadow is actually a really good idea.

We're also finding ourselves kind of smitten with Suzy Gerstein, the makeup artist interviewed for the article, who is a fan of mixing black eyeliner into a dark lip in order to look "like you just ate a bird, or a rat.” Gerstein also sums up the neo-goth vibe in a pretty accurate way: "The point is to look soft, but scary: beautiful, but like you might bite someone.” While the rest of the article unfortunately tries to tell us that we'd be prettier if we tone down those sharp edges (sigh), Gerstein gives us permission to get weird with our makeup.
