If there's one thing we've learned from our endless hours at the gym, it's that fitness trends are as fickle as fashion. Hot workouts come in and out at the drop of a hat mat, making it virtually impossible to keep up with the (cardio) Joneses. And, we know we shouldn't get wrapped up in what's hot or not, but trying the workout du jour does keep things interesting. To keep us in the loop, lifestyle blog Elizabeth Street is reporting on a new survey from the American College of Sports Medicine that predicts the top 20 fitness trends of 2014.
Somewhat surprisingly, everyone's favorite Latin dance-based workout, Zumba, didn't even make the list. It was bumped off by high-intensity P90X and CrossFit, which nabbed the top spots. Basic weight training also made the list, along with perennial favorite, yoga — good news for those of us who need a little namaste in our lives. You may scoff at this list of relative fitness newbies, but there's a good chance that next year's trends will have a big impact on the class selection at your favorite gym. (Elizabeth Street)
