"The hills are alive with radioactivity." That about sums up Saturday Night Live's cold open last night, which parodied a "condensed" version of NBC's highly viewed Sound of Music live broadcast. Things started off fairly normal. Cast member Kate McKinnon took on the role of Maria von Trapp, while Taran Killam played the captain, and a bevy of other regulars were the kids. Then came Dooneese! Indeed, Kristen Wiig's lovingly deranged youth with an oversized forehead and tiny doll hands made a surprise return, quickly confusing and terrorizing the wide-eyed von Trapps. She peppered "Do-Re-Mi" with some unsettling stories about chancy bar encounters and "tea, the drink that comes from the toilet." After the captain sends the children away, he and Maria share some awkward sexual tension. "You're so beautiful in that terra-cotta disaster of a dress," he remarks, while she swoons. Their moment is ruined, of course, when those minuscule doll hands of terror make their untimely return. Watch one of most memorable cold opens we've seen in SNL's 39th season below. (Hulu)
