The Most Retweeted Tweet Of 2013 Is Pretty Bittersweet

If our tweets are a modern-day time capsule, then 2013 was a pretty sad year. While 2012's most retweeted tweet (say that 10 times fast) was an inspiring snapshot of President Barack Obama embracing the First Lady after winning "four more years," this year's most popular posts convey the heartbreak of losing two charismatic actors well before their time.
According to Twitter, actress Lea Michele had the most retweeted tweet of 2013, shared by some 408,266 people. On July 29, she shared a picture of her and late boyfriend Cory Monteith, who had tragically died two weeks earlier. The message read, "Thank you all for helping me through this time with your enormous love & support. Cory will forever be in my heart." Tissue, please?
The sad news continues. The second-most retweeted tweet, with 400,367 shares, was one announcing the untimely death of 40-year-old actor Paul Walker.
It's hard to say why these two particular deaths resonated so much in a year that also saw the passing of Nelson Mandela and the end of DOMA. It's even harder to explain why the third-most retweeted tweet was of One Direction's Niall Horan sharing his 20th birthday party. We just hope that 2014 brings some better news. (L.A. Times)
