It's okay if you want to do a small victory dance at your desk. A second Barneys flagship store certainly deserves such a celebration. Come 2017, the luxury retailer will be opening a location in Chelsea — the 57,000-square-foot megastore will be filled with designer shoes, bags, and clothes, clothes, clothes — and we are ready to shop. Barneys closed 16 locations nationwide in the last few years, but is now ready to start growing again — and in a major way.
The move back to Chelsea (at West 16th Street and 7th Avenue) is significant in that it brings Barneys back to its roots. This is the spot where the retailer opened its first store in 1923. We can thank chairman Richard Perry for this impressive expansion. He helped turn around the company's near $600 million debt. Can we have this guy manage our wallets? And, maybe throw in a gift certificate while he's at it? (WWD)
