Peels On Bowery Closes, Our Hearts Break

Recently, it seems like all of our favorite New York spots are shutting down. In less than a month, we've said goodbye to 285 Kent and Gray's Papaya. And, yesterday's news has us completely heartbroken: Peels, the Bowery-based cool-kids diner, is closed. Since the summer of 2010, this quintessential comfort-food restaurant has been serving up an incredible menu to New Yorkers, who would willingly endure long waits to enjoy the brunch. And, once upon a time, when R29 HQ called the Bowery home, we spent a lot of time there.
Owners Taavo Somer and William Tigertt were reportedly in discussions with the real-estate-investment group that bought the building last summer. And, as Grub Street reports, the restaurateurs finally agreed to "turn the restaurant over." An unnamed applicant for the building plans to open a restaurant in the space with a new concept. But, we'll find it hard to walk by 325 Bowery and see something else where our beloved Peels once was. How could it ever be as good?
In a statement to Grub Street, the owners expressed their disappointment: "We’ve had a great run and thank all of our staff, the neighborhood, and customers for the years of support and memories. We’ll miss everyone, but we have to say goodbye." Admittedly, we are not ready to say goodbye. If only we could have indulged in one last biscuit-and-apple-cider breakfast. (Grub Street)
