When it comes to our faces, we don’t rely on just anyone to tell us what our skin needs to get that ever-elusive glow. Instead, we turn to skin-care veteran (and celebrity fave!) Renée Rouleau, who knows it takes more than the right products to get radiant. Each week, she’ll be serving up her expert tips to keep your complexion in tip-top shape.
I often see Jessica Lucas — who's starred in everything from Melrose Place to the newly released That Awkward Moment — in L.A. Of course, I was thrilled to chat with her about her beauty routine and upcoming projects. She’s sweet, smart, and down-to-earth and I love that I get to give her skin treatments often.

What three beauty products can you not live without?
"First, La Mer's The Lip Balm — it's a total splurge but definitely worth it. I suffer from dry lips and am a lip balm and chapstick addict. Unfortunately, I find that most of them contain ingredients that make my lips feel even more dry. This is the only balm I've found that keeps my lips looking healthy and smooth. Bonus, it's mint flavored so it tastes awesome!

"Second, I love Renee Rouleau BHA Clarifying Serum. I have pretty good skin (thanks, Mom and Dad!) but my one problem area is clogged pores. This means that I need to exfoliate more often than most people, but I feel like exfoliators that contain anything grainy tend to clog me up even more. This serum is completely smooth so I don't even feel it on my skin and the results are the same. No Bumps! "Lastly, Moroccanoil Intense Curl Cream. It's a hair product that's great at enhancing my natural curl without leaving a gross residue. I just use a quarter sized amount after I get of the shower and any frizz is gone."

What’s your signature red carpet beauty look?
"I'm a firm believer in 'less is more,' so I try to stick with highlighting the features I like most instead of caking on the makeup. I tend to like a really dramatic eye and neutral lips. But, if there's a particular beauty trend that I'm excited about, I'll branch out and try that. Right now, I'm loving the super-dark, wine-colored lip. Oh, and of course, I love for my skin to be glowing and dewy."

Describe your daily beauty routine.
"I start with a good coat of moisturizer with SPF, then put on a light coat of the Sonia Kashuk tinted moisturizer. Follow that up with some concealer, mascara, and lip balm and I'm good to go! At night, I use a three step program recommended to me by Renee, and I swear by it! Renee Rouleau Aloe Cleansing Milk to thoroughly cleanse my skin of any leftover makeup or dirt. Renee Rouleau Elderberry Toner to even out my skin and The Renee Rouleau Hawaiian Nourishing Cream to lock in as much moisture as possible."

How do you keep your skin, hair healthy with a busy schedule?
"Sleep, sleep, sleep. When I don't get enough I can really see it on my face so I make sure I get plenty. Also, I'm very diligent about watching my face every night before I go to bed, no matter how tired I am. As for my hair, I've only dyed it once in my life so it tends to be pretty healthy but the heat from the different appliances on set can take its toll so I usually ask the hair stylist to use some sort of heat protectant spray on my hair before they style it."

What are some of the beauty rules/beliefs you follow?
"I already touched on both of these but they are the only two things I really live by: Wear sunscreen every day and wash your face every night! I live in Los Angeles, so sunscreen is extra important. I'm also saddened by the amount of young people that are choosing to partake in plastic surgery as an early anti-aging method. Putting on SPF 30 everyday is really all you need to ward off wrinkles and it protects you from skin cancer."

What’s your favorite beauty treatment to indulge in?
"I get facials a few times a year and they are incredible. Even though I follow a strict beauty regimen I think it's important to see a professional a few times a year to really clean out my skin."

What’s your favorite way to take time for yourself and relax?
"Reading! I recently created a nook in my backyard so that I can sit outside and read as much as possible. As an actress, I have a very active imagination and I love to escape by making the world of whatever I'm reading come to life in my head. I also love my profession so I love to keep up with all the current movies, shows, plays, you know. I'm loving American Horror Story and Scandal right now. Lastly, I'm really into hot yoga. It's great at improving my posture and flexibility and I flush out all the toxins in my body at the same time."

Tell me about some of the projects you have in the works.
"I have two very different movies coming out in early 2014: One is called That Awkward Moment which came out on January 31st and starring Zak Efron, Miles Teller, and Michael B. Jordan. It's a romantic comedy about three guys and their pact to stay single. I play Vera. She's going through a break up with Michael's character but is having a hard time letting him go.

The other one is called Pompeii and is out February 21st. It's a period piece that chronicles a love story between a rich girl (Emily Browning) and gladiator (Kit Harington) set against the backdrop of the destruction of Pompeii by Mount Vesuvius. I play Ariadne, a slave girl and confidant to Emily Browning's character. The rest of the cast — Keifer Sutherland, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jared Harris — is also fantastic, and I have a British accent, which was a new challenge for me."

What's the best beauty tip you learned on set or from the professionals?
"Always put on your concealer after you do your eye makeup. This allows you to clean up any eye shadow residue that falls so you don't end up with smudges."
