She's inspired by Grace Jones and David Bowie, counts Simone Rocha and Miu Miu among her favorite labels, and reads Kurt Vonnegut and Alice Munro in her spare time. Yep, Lorde really just might be the most amazing teenager on the planet. For proof, one need look no further than the March issue of Vogue, which features a stunning Tom Munro-lensed photo shoot and probing interview with the Kiwi singer. It's not easy to steal the spotlight from cover girl Rihanna, but dare we say she's done it?
Otherwise known as Ella Yelich-O'Connor, the 17-year-old Grammy winner sees her bold fashion statements — including dark lipstick, piercings, and the odd bit of Chanel — as a form of empowerment. “The kind of clothes that I’ve found I like to wear over the past year and six months have all been things that make me feel powerful and strong,” she says. “I wear a lot of pants. I wear a lot of long, structured dresses.” Oh, and did we mention that she has a dog called Jimmy Choo?

Despite her fame, Lorde is focused most on keeping it real — both for her sake and for her fans. “It’s a fine line between being a role model and preaching to people," she says in the interview. "I never want to tell anyone how they should be, especially not someone my age. But, that being said, I’m conscious of the fact that people my age are reading what I say and listening to what I say, and that’s cool — particularly for the girls who are into what I do.” (Ahem, guilty as charged.)
