Jumpsuits, Crop Tops, & Other Fashion Don’ts Are Huge For Spring

It's time to cross crop tops, jumpers, and rompers off the "things only fashion people love" list. According to contemporary fashion buyers nationwide, those trends are already huge sellers for spring 2014.
Brooke Jaffe, Bloomingdale's ready-to-wear fashion director, tells WWD that she's having a hard time keeping up with the demand for jumpsuits: "We’ve reordered and [are] trying to get as many units as possible." Denim overalls are also selling briskly. "Any brand that’s made a jumpsuit for spring is doing well," Jaffe says.
Meanwhile, Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor's best seller — the beloved/feared crop top — sits atop many women's "would never wear" list. Shoppers are pairing the style with higher waisted skirts and pants, often in a coordinating print, for a look that's more sophisticated than vixenish.

So, to review: jumpsuits, overalls, crop tops, and matching printed sets? We're sure a lot of you out there are shielding your eyes. We've long championed all of them, but these trends are usually considered to be somewhere on the spectrum between "difficult to wear" or, worse, "total fashion don'ts." But, contemporary buyers report that, after a long, cold winter, consumers are ready to refresh their wardrobes in a big way. And, unlike past years' spring trends — which represent a gentle evolution of, say, hemlines or silhouettes — crop tops and jumpsuits are items that most women simply don't have in their closets. That translates to big sales.
What do you think? Are you ready to embrace these fashion no-nos for spring? Or, have you been on board with crop tops and jumpsuits since way back? One thing's certain: These so-called "fashion people" trends are being embraced by the non-editors of the world in a major way. (WWD)
