Believe it or not, HBO's upcoming drama The Leftovers isn't a gripping parable about what happens when refrigerated turkey and stale potatoes get microwaved. It promises to be far more compelling.
From creators Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta, the apocalyptic saga is based on Perrotta's novel of the same name, which zeroes in on a suburban community after a mysterious event wipes out 140 million people from the face of the earth. Lindelof critics are skeptical about handing the keys to yet another supernatural mystery to the man who many believe was responsible for the downfall of Lost. But, we're willing to give him a clean slate — especially after watching the sinister first teaser.

Not much actual footage is revealed, but we do see enough to confirm what we already suspected: The Leftovers will be the best new show of 2014. The stellar cast features Justin Theroux as a police chief looking for answers, and Liv Tyler as a woman being courted by a cult. Plus, the pilot was directed by Friday Night Lights creator Peter Berg. If Lindelof can avoid some of the pitfalls that have plagued his past work, HBO will likely have another major hit to add to its powerhouse lineup.
The Leftovers premieres on June 15.
