The Next September Issue-Style Documentary Debuts Next Week

If you consider "Florals for spring? Groundbreaking." as instantly quotable as "Make my day…," you might want to clear your schedule next week. Debuting on April 17 at the Tribeca Film Festival, Dior and I is the latest in filmmaker Frédéric Tcheng's long line of fashion documentaries, which includes Valentino: The Last Emperor and Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel. The film follows Raf Simons for several months as he attempts to settle into his new role as the sixth couturier for Christian Dior.
As all good fashion documentaries go, it's not all kittens and sunshine. Simons told WWD, "Throughout the movie, you see the struggle to get that fabric done," which will be a central plot point and involves an intensely complicated, highly technical printing technique that only four engravers in France know how to execute…and that Simons demanded for his first show.
And, as all great fashion documentaries go, displays of outrageousness should be expected as well. While it might not be as What!?-worthy as André Leon Talley swinging a tennis racket, we're sure the whole process of creating a new, game-changing couture collection in just two months is the perfect environment for some crazy-making. See you at the premiere on the 17th. If not, we'll keep you updated on when you'll be able to stream it online.
