Remember all that controversy over the possible casting of white actress Rooney Mara as the Native American character Tiger Lily in the new live-action movie based on the children's classic Peter Pan? Well, it seems the issue is still going strong. Today, according to Deadline, Warner Brothers announced Pan's full cast and confirmed Mara's part. Joining her will be Amanda Seyfried as Mary Darling, Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard, and Garrett Hedlund as Hook. Hollywood newbie Levi Miller landed the coveted title role. The movie will start production next week and is expected to be released July 2015.
The studio hasn't made any further comments about the casting since it told Variety, "The world being created is multi-racial/international — and a very different character than previously imagined." We're going to give WB the benefit of the doubt here because we'd like to think we live in a world where the racist inaccuracies of 1950s Walt Disney are no longer present — and because we have yet to see details about the script or plot. White actresses may not be the most PC choice for Native American characters, but here's hoping the studio honors its promise to make the final project much more international than the original.
