Shailene Woodley Did Her Own Mascara For The Met Ball

We tend to think of Shailene Woodley as a naturalist regarding hair and makeup, but we also know the girl can work a red carpet. And, if her turn at the Met Gala this year proved anything, it's that she can turn up the glamour while sticking with her earth-girl look. "Everyone who knows Shailene knows how for the earth and from the earth she is," her makeup artist, Roxy, said. "And, that's how we envisioned it: Shailene coming out of the woods. We imagined her as this earth goddess."

While the inspiration may seem a little out of left field, one look at Woodley's dress and it all falls into place. Woodley took the Met Gala in a rad Rodarte number that was embellished with butterfly details. "When I first saw the dress, all I could think was how good it was for Shay," Roxy said. "It was that goddess feeling that made it for me, like the 'glass slipper fit' for her." Roxy also drew inspiration from the form of the butterfly wings. "The idea was to play into the shape for her eyeshadow — extending the shadow out to create that wing, but with elements of smoke."

Roxy applied Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Eyeshadow in Fun across her lids before winging the color out, and then she lightened it with Fate. She followed by brightening the inner corner of Woodley's eyes with Foreshadow. "This really opened her eyes and was the perfect accent to the other colors layered on her eyes," Roxy said. Since the eyes were so dramatic, Roxy focused simply on sculpting Woodley's cheekbones with blush and bronzer and kept her lips neutral with a nude, mauve-y pink.

The finishing touch? Mascara — but not by Roxy. "Shay loves to apply her own mascara. It's her ritual," Roxy said. "I love watching Shay do her mascara. It's that moment where I watch her connect with herself and her look. I have so many gorgeous pictures of her sitting on her countertop in her bathrobe, applying it herself. It's very Edie Sedgwick. It makes me smile." So, Woodley isn't just of the earth, she's also down to earth, which is a pretty sweet combo.

For the Met Gala, Woodley's hair was spikey and full of volume, which fit perfectly into Roxy's vision. "The dress is so feminine and soft, and I think the hair brought out a lot more of her badass side," Roxy said. "The makeup has a bit of both going on." Basically, it's the high-low mix, but for beauty.

And, while it may seem like there would be some challenges doing makeup for someone who is so heavy into natural products, Roxy has taken the task in stride. "It's easy to go to a lot of mainstream lines that I can count on, but Shailene's opened me up to new lines that fall within the realm of being green," Roxy said, listing 100% Pure, Living Libations, and Vapour Organic Beauty as a few of Woodley's favorites. "At the end of the day, Shay needs to look flawless. So, it's great that there are brands that we can trust, that fall within our values, and that also work well." Basically, this is a beauty match made in heaven — or wherever it is earth goddesses come from.
