Dior Debuts Divergent Eyeliner

When we spotted the reverse cat-eye trend in New York during Fashion Week, it was love at first sight. Instead of a graphic, precise line along the models' top lids, designers like Nicholas K had models wear smudge-y black wings along the lower lashline. We thought this new cat-eye would be the talk of the town for months to come, but it looks like the next big liner trend is already nipping at its heels. Say hello to "divergent liner," as seen at Dior's resort presentation.

A happy marriage between the reverse cat-eye and double-liner looks, divergent liner consists of a classic cat-eye on top, with a half, unconnected line extending straight out from the lower lashline. The negative space in between the two liners gives this style a futuristic edge rather than the retro feel associated with the classic feline flick. And, because the under-eye line is precise rather than blurred, it eliminates the just-rolled-out-of-bed, sleepy quality of the reverse cat-eye that some people weren't so fond of.

The best part about double liner? You already know how to do it — that is, if you know how to do a basic cat-eye. Just sketch your winged line on to the top, and then add another to your bottom lid, stopping about halfway through the lashline. Peter Philips, Dior beauty's creative and image director, used the brand's It-Line Eye-Liner (out in June) to draw it on and then pressed on some black shadow for ultimate staying power.

Aside from looking super rad, this trend is also great because it actually opens your eye — a feat few graphic liner looks can boast. The trick is those upper and lower wings; since they don't touch, the bare skin in between gives the illusion of a more extended lid. Plus, it's an innovative alternative to the traditional smoky eye. Add all that up, and it looks like we have a contender for our new favorite liner look.
