Harry Potter fanatics have already circled November 18, 2016 in their calendars as the day the franchise's spin-off film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be released. And now, all film fans should circle that date, because if the rumors are true, it might just be Alfonso Cuarón's next movie.
According to a report by Nikki Finke, the Mexican director is in "deep talks" to make Beasts his first project since winning the Best Director Oscar for Gravity. If the name sounds familiar to all you Potterheads out there, it should. Cuarón directed The Prisoner of Azkaban, which many consider the best film in the entire series.
Details surrounding Beasts are scarce, but from what we know, Cuarón sounds like the perfect fit. The film, which is written by J.K. Rowling herself, is based on a popular textbook used by Hogwarts students within the Harry Potter universe. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean we'll be seeing Daniel Radcliffe and company resume their roles come 2016. In fact, Rowling described it as “neither a prequel nor a sequel” to the Potter stories. Instead, it will follow the adventures of the textbook's author, “magizoologist” Newt Scamander.
The film is the first of a planned trilogy and will unfold in New York 70 years before Potter and friends come into the picture. So, yeah, J.K Rowling, Alfonso Cuarón, and magical creatures roaming through The Big Apple. Today is a good day. (Slash Film)
