After the deluge of so-so summer blockbusters, it looks like Hollywood may be saving the best for last. While the rest of us have been lining up to see the same old big-budget fare, renegade filmmaker Robert Rodriguez has been holed up in his DIY movie house Troublemaker Studios on the edge of Austin, TX, putting the finishing touches on his long-awaited sequel, Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For.
In the brand-new trailer, we see much of the same sex, style, and savagery that we saw in the first film, along with some revealing new plot points. Rodriguez and codirector, Frank Miller, look to have crafted a tale of vengeance that centers around returning characters Marv (Mickey Rourke) and Dwight (Josh Brolin), along with Johnny, an all new antihero played here by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. From what we can gather, the three outlaws team up to take down the titular Basin City's corrupt overlords, namely the sinister Senator Roark (Powers Boothe). Other familiar faces set to light the screen ablaze include Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, and Eva Green.

While the movie is technically based on Miller's eponymous graphic novel, the legendary author has crafted all-new story lines that will be integrated with his previously published material. It's decidedly darker fare than most moviegoers are used to this time of year, but thanks to a series of well-publicized delays, the anticipation surrounding the sequel has reached a fever pitch.
Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For hits theaters on August 22, but you can watch the action-packed new trailer below.
