Hypocritical t.A.T.u. Singer “Won’t Accept A Gay Son”

Update: Lena Katina, Julia Volkova's ex-t.A.T.u. partner, posted a Facebook update to clarify her views on the situation and support the LGBT community. "Hey, all! I am seeing some comments lately regarding my position about LGBT and my religion. I can say one thing: God is teaching us to live in love, to be tolerant and not to judge other people! And I do so! Love is love and it is a wonderful feeling! I think everybody should be free to love who they love and be with who they want to spend their life with! Xoxo"

Remember t.A.T.u? The Russian duo whose big hit, "All the Things She Said," featured them kissing in the rain? In the early aughts, they were arguably more famous for their questionably lesbian relationship than their music. You'd think that people who became famous for flaunting their sexuality (the duo went on to make headlines when they protested NBC's refusal to air a lesbian kiss in 2003) would be tolerant and accepting of others.

Nope. In a recent interview, t.A.T.u. member Yulia Volkova reveals that she's okay with lesbians, but does not accept gay men. When an interviewer asks the singer if she will "condemn your son, if he is gay." Volkova responds, "Yes, I would condemn him, because I believe that a real man must be a real man. God created man for procreation, it is the nature. The man for me is the support, the strength male voice, male look. Definitely no, I won't support a gay son."

The interviewer can't believe what he's hearing. "Stop, stop. You just told me that you do not mind if your daughter was a lesbian. You were talking about freedom," he says.

"This only applies to a daughter, not a son," Volkova says. "I think for men, it's a bad freedom...A man has no right to be a fag. Two girls together — not the same thing as the two men together. It seems to me that lesbians look aesthetically much nicer than two men holding their hands or kissing."

Still, Volkova insists that she's "not against gays." It's just that she wants her son "to be a real man, not a fag." Also, she has "many gay friends," and she believes that "being gay is still better than murderers, thieves, or drug addicts. If you choose out of all this, being gay is better than the rest."

Yes, everyone is entitled to her own beliefs. It just feels a tad hypocritical that someone who built her career on pretending to be gay (and still professing to be bisexual) would offer such an outright condemnation of homosexuality. And, to say that it's different for women to "choose" to be gay than for men to be.

Volkova may have chosen to pretend to be a lesbian for the sake of her career , but she clearly doesn't understand that it's not a choice for people who are actually gay. Nor is it based on what "looks nicer" aesthetically. Sigh. Just...sigh. (Styleite)
