Creepmaster Tim Burton’s New Movie Has a Feminist Message

They say behind every great man is a woman whose work he's taking credit for. At least, that was the case for artists Margaret and Walter Keane, the subjects of a new biopic by Tim Burton. The Dark Shadows director is trading his typical fantasy world for a drama with a strong message of female empowerment.

Big Eyes tells the story of the Keanes, circa 1950s and '60s. Margaret (played by Amy Adams) is a divorcee with a young daughter and a knack for painting young women with huge eyes. She falls for Walter (Christoph Waltz, who can never say no to playing a baddie), only to discover he wants to take all the credit for her kitschy art. Cue a power struggle for the ages.

Krysten Ritter and Jason Schwartzman costar, and we're still holding our breaths for Johnny Depp to suddenly surface as an art critic with a Romanian accent and some sort of nose prosthetic.
