Justin Long: I Am The Walrus

Thanks to enterprises like Pixar, many of our favorite celebrities lend their voices to animated features, usually as animals. Justin Long is no stranger to this phenomenon. He's used this very skill in the likes of Alvin and the Chipmunks and Walking with Dinosaurs. His newest film, Tusk, however, is a departure from this art, as he literally plays a walrus.

In the Kevin Smith horror flick — a phrase that should be an oxymoron — Long plays a creepy podcaster with a seventies porno 'stache who falls victim to a madman with a walrus fetish. And, in case that's not enough to convince you this movie's really gonna be scary, Smith went ahead and added the kid from The Sixth Sense to the cast — Haley Joel Osment.

Don't get it twisted, though. We love ourselves some Justin Long. It's just impossible not to address the quirky nature of this particular role. So, we caught up with Long about, well, being a walrus.

Talk about getting pitched a movie where you turn into a walrus. “Kevin described it as a character piece between two people and I don’t think he mentioned anything about a walrus. When it took that turn I was thrown a bit. I don’t think I’ve played a character that overtly douchey and narcissistic, and so that was a lot of fun. And obviously I’ve never played a walrus either.”

What was more terrifying to wear the walrus outfit or the moustache? “There’s something more horrific about the moustache, but the suit was slightly more uncomfortable than the moustache. The nice thing about being in the suit was by the time we got to doing all that stuff, I got to shave my moustache and my girlfriend wasn’t as nauseated by my face. So that was nice. It was not comfortable, it wasn’t built for comfort. I would stay in there up to three hours at a time, one time four. Good bladder control. I was sweating so much. I was losing so much fluid, I didn’t have to pee as much as I thought I would. It was a latex case of emotion. I was going to really dark places in that thing.”
