When we heard that Lena Dunham was producing a movie for HBO, we initially thought it would be a follow-up to Tiny Furniture or some kind of Girls spin-off (Hannah Horvath's high school years, anyone?). Rather, she's working on Three Suits, a documentary about the revolutionary Brooklyn-based bespoke tailor, Bindle & Keep. According to Vanity Fair, the film will "follow several of Bindle & Keep's transgender clients as they go through the process of having custom suits made, examining the significance of the process for a set of customers with complex gender identities."
Described by Dunham on Twitter as "breaking down binaries, making smart suits," the Park Slope clothier run by Daniel Friedman has become particularly popular within the LGBT community for its inclusive vision and a willingness to accommodate all of its clients' needs. Although it had always been his intention to design for an extensive audience (standing at 5'5", he recognized the lack of options out there for short men), it wasn't until Friedman met his business partner, Rachel Tutera of The Handsome Butch, that he realized a demand for custom suits in the gay and transgender community existed — particularly among women and transgender men.
"When we started this business, it was for money," he told The New York Times last year. "And, now it's not. It was the emotion, the excitement that people had, that became everything for the company. At least for me. You don't expect to turn a corner and that's what you're going to find." Friedman's company has changed countless lives (as noted in the article by the amount of 'thank you' notes he receives), and with Dunham's upcoming film, it's bound to touch so many more.
