The World’s Most Perfect T-Shirt Dress Can Even Be Worn On The Red Carpet

We pride ourselves on the versatility of our closet. There's absolutely nothing in there that we can't figure out at least three outfits and three occasions for, and every garment that makes it into our rotation has to meet those criteria. We wouldn't go so far as to say that everything we have works for every occasion; one such mismatch would be our easy, weekend-friendly jersey pieces and any event fancier than grab-and-go brunch. So, when we saw Jennifer Garner wearing a black T-shirt dress on the red carpet for Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, you know we took notes.

What makes this particular T-shirt dress work with heels at a film premiere? Three crucial things, detailed here:
1. The fabric: Your heather gray jersey won't cut it. Look for a heavyweight one that's still stretchy and cozy, but won't wrinkle quite so quickly. Garner's Valentino dress might be made of Rolls Royce-caliber fibers, but looking for a substantial weight to your dress will give you the same effect.
2. The neckline: A trim crew neck just looks expensive. The thick fabric, of course, keeps this piece looking neat, but this dress would become too basic, for lack of a better word, if it came in a V- or scooped-neck shape.
3. The fit: Garner's frock is cut in a fit-and-flare style that you've undoubtedly seen around these past few seasons. The key is making sure nothing is too fitted or too flared. Plus, that pleat provides a little extra flounce without looking creating too much volume.
If you're lucky enough to own a piece as extra-versatile as this, wear it with Stan Smiths and a denim jacket on the weekend, or throw on ankle-strap heels and grab a clutch for that next big night out. Thanks, Jen — we've got it from here!
