Well, we knew it was just a matter of time. With just 12 episodes remaining for The Colbert Report, the show's fairy godfather, Jon Stewart, finally appeared as a guest. While the pretense for Stewart's visit was to promote his directorial debut Rosewater, his powwow with Stephen Colbert was far more significant than just another celebrity guest hawking their latest project. This was the comedy world's most famous bromance hugging it out one last time right before our eyes.
The interview started with Colbert fully in character grilling a totally game Stewart. But, once they realize the significance of the moment, it devolves into a total love fest. Listen, we know Stewart's contract runs until at least 2015. We also know that Colbert is moving to much flashier digs when he takes over the Late Show from David Letterman next year. But, there's just something about the Comedy Central one-two punch of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report that feels special. It feels monumental. It's something we'll tell our grandkids about, the way our parents talked about Johnny Carson. And, watching the two of them together last night, resigned to the end...pass the Kleenex, please.
