This Is What Tiffany’s First Ad Starring A Gay Couple Looks Like

Today, Tiffany & Co. debuted a new ad featuring a same-sex couple — a very welcome first for the brand. The image is a sneak preview of Tiffany's forthcoming “Will You” campaign, which "honors the idea that love knows no boundaries," a representative told us today.
The ad features a real-life New York City couple looking quite handsome, hanging out on a brownstone stoop. The accompanying copy, which may or may not have given us a lump in our throat, reads:
"Will you promise to never stop completing my sentences or singing off-key, which I'm afraid you do often? And will you let today be the first sentence of one long story that never, ever ends?"

Tiffany & Co. is the latest brand to embrace same-sex couples in its ads. In 2011, future Madewell designer Somsack Sikhounmuong and his boyfriend were featured in a J.Crew catalog. Last year, Nate Berkus and then-fiancé Jeremiah Brent starred in a Banana Republic campaign. And of course, who could forget the Cheerios non-troversy?
Unlike those brands, Tiffany & Co. is synonymous with love and marriage — which makes this ad's statement more powerful and potentially more influential to those with a "traditional" (read: intolerant) view of same-sex marriage.
The moving campaign comes right on the heels of a discrimination suit brought against Saks Fifth Avenue by a transgender employee, in which Saks argued that trans* people are not protected by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 — yet another sign that we still have a long way to go toward achieving LGBTQ equality. Here's hoping ads like this one can help normalize and celebrate love in all its forms.
