First, the bad news: Despite bringing nonstop controversy, Terry Richardson is still booking magazine covers and photo shoots. Don’t worry, though — there’s hope for new talent yet, and Stella McCartney’s spring campaign is proof.
For the seventh time, the designer has enlisted Russian supermodel Natalia Vodianova as the face of her collection. Vodianova may be a total veteran at this point, but McCartney’s found a fresh talent in her photographer, Harley Weir. Over the last few years, the 25-year-old Central Saint Martins grad has steadily won a following for her compelling, no-frills imagery. The Londoner has dipped her toes into fashion, shooting for artsy magazines such as Another, as well as for brands like Levi’s, Meadham Kirchhoff, and Urban Outfitters.
Weir’s most recent work for McCartney features dreamy portraits of a sundrenched Vodianova on the beach in Ibiza, surrounded by Stella McCartney’s metallic, quilted Falabella bags. And sure, it’s impossible to make Vodianova look bad (c’mon, she's a supermodel), but these striking photos are a welcome change from the sexed-up shots and stunt photography that have been populating magazines lately. More of this, please!
