Oprah Winfrey, the producer of the Oscar-nominated movie Selma (she also plays civil rights activist Annie Lee Cooper in the film), will march in Selma, Alabama on Sunday with members of the film’s cast and crew to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Selma's star David Oyelowo and director Ava DuVernay will join Oprah at the event which, according to Paramount, will pay homage to King's leadership in the Selma voting rights protests of 1965.
The film (which is flat-out excellent) centers on the march Martin Luther King Jr. led from Selma to Montgomery, AL in 1964, and focuses on the women and men on the ground who led protests in the civil rights movement.
While we're still shocked Selma only received two Oscar nominations (and not just because DuVernay would have been the first black woman to be nominated for best director), the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag allowed for some venting on social media.
President Barack Obama held a screening of Selma at the White House on Friday, CNN reports. Director Ava DuVernay and the cast also attended.
